You were
right one time . then it seemed to me you were there to change my luck
I was wrong
that's alright, I don't belong . perhaps I'll never belong
why do you say it like that?
only thinking about yourself . don't you see I'm crashing?
time on your side . could it be on mine? at least once?
won't you please don't be mean
that's alright, I don't belong . perhaps I never did...
how are you over this now?
you don't have to tell no one
cuz no one wants to know
well you don't want no happiness, you r sad . [no thoughts here, a tear rolling down her cheek maybe]
yes we were falling down . are we? or am I?
you get the only
you aren't the only one
you will have to go . please, stay... please

The Strokes and Regina Spektor - Post modern girls (Julian's side)
Note: It's hard to determine whether this musicians refer to post-modern as after present or as in postmodernism movement. Anyway, listening to both sides of the song separatedly, and then again together, one (or least I) can imagine it was written more in the sense of a crash of perceptions. One side struggling to keep everything alive, or make it less harmful and the other one just willing to turn the page. Here, I tried to focus on the girl side, just because the title suggests that should be the main topic in the song although his voice (hence his thoughts) seems to dominate.
It wasn't easy to get to the end of this post. It took me some months, several hours thinking, listening, writing, deleting and re-writing. The goal was to put down the way the phrase "don't have to tell no one cuz no one wants to know" gave me the sense of being on my own, for bad or for good. I hope that overthinking Regina's thoughts have helped leading you to the same stage.
